Start with texture
Texture is the first thing your fingers notice. Common descriptions include smooth or “skin-like” foam, velvety or peach-fuzz coatings, sugar or crystal-coated surfaces, and creamy “butter” finishes. Listings often use these words loosely, so look at close-up photos and read the description for the actual material.
- Smooth foam: even and soft, usually easy to wipe clean.
- Velvety coating: soft to stroke, but can pick up lint.
- Sugar texture: a slightly gritty, sparkly feel.
- Butter texture: very soft and creamy, often slow to rise.
Firmness: soft, medium, or firm
Some people love a squishy that sinks almost flat with a light touch. Others prefer something they can push against. If a listing only says “super soft,” look for a demonstration video or check whether it’s also called a stress ball, which usually means a firmer feel.
Slow-rise or quick bounce?
Slow-rising squishies are made from foam that takes several seconds to return to shape after you squeeze it. Watching it rise is part of the fun. Gel or water-filled squishies spring back right away. Neither is better — it depends on whether you enjoy the slow reveal or a quick, bouncy response.
Size and how you’ll use it
Listings usually give a size in inches or centimeters. A palm-sized squishy (around 3–4 inches) fits in a bag or pocket. Jumbo squishies (6 inches or more) are better for display or squeezing with both hands. Mini squishies are fun to collect but can be a choking hazard for young children.
Scent, colors and decoration
Many squishies are scented. Some people find that delightful, while others find it overwhelming or irritating. If scent matters to you, look for listings that clearly say “unscented” rather than assuming. Painted faces and glitter coatings can wear off with heavy use, so a display piece and an everyday squeeze toy may need different choices.
